Tottenham Hotspur appear to be on the hunt for a new central defender, and Pete O’Rourke offered the latest update on their attempt to bring in Takehiro Tomiyasu on The Football Terrace’s The Done Deal Show.
Tomiyasu has been linked with a move to Spurs this summer, with Fabio Paratici using his Serie A contacts to strike a deal for the centre-back, however, Tomiyasu has been representing Japan at the Olympic Games this summer, which has made the deal take a lot longer.

Tottenham have already lost experienced and long-serving centre-back Toby Alderweireld, who left to go and pursue a career in Qatar with Al-Duhail, and that will be why the club are looking to bring in Tomiyasu for a reported £15 million.
O’Rourke gave his thoughts on Spurs’ pursuit of the Japanese international.
“I’m expecting them to step up their interest in the Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu. Now, his involvement at the Olympics is over; he’s a versatile defender who can play centre-back and right-back, so I would expect them to get that deal done now once the [Cristian] Romero one is done.
“It’s a big-money deal, that Romero deal, close to £50 million – which is a big fee for the Atalanta defender, especially when people were thinking Spurs were not going to have a lot of money to spend in this transfer window.”

As mentioned by O’Rourke, it’s not just Tomiyasu that has been linked with a move to Spurs, as Cristian Romero is reportedly edging ever closer to joining Tottenham and becoming Nuno Espirito Santo’s second permanent signing as Spurs manager.
Being able to add Romero and Tomiyasu would be some good business by Spurs, especially considering they lost one of their best defenders from last season in Alderweireld, who managed a 6.86 WhoScored rating, with their two transfer targets receiving 7.14 and 6.77 in their respective leagues last term.
Therefore, if they were able to replicate their Serie A form in the Premier League in the upcoming campaign should they join Spurs, the club could more than fill the void left by Alderweireld.
