Nuno Espirito Santo’s tenure as Tottenham Hotspur manager got off to the perfect start on Sunday, as the Lilywhites defeated reigning Premier League champions Manchester City 1-0 in the season opener.
Santo’s side picked up their first win courtesy of Heung-Min Son’s second-half goal, and now face the Portuguese’s former side Wolves next in the league.
Despite keeping a clean sheet against the reigning top flight champions, it appears that Santo is still looking to improve his backline, and could make a surprise move for a Chelsea defender.
According to Sky Sports, Kurt Zouma has emerged as a target for Spurs, as they look to bolster their defensive options.
The Frenchman is believed to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge after falling behind Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger in the packing order, and has been linked with a move to a number of clubs throughout the window.
West Ham United had emerged as early favourites for the 26-year-old’s signature, but a move hasn’t materialised and now their London rivals Spurs have emerged as potential suitors.
Zouma is apparently keen to stay in the capital, having refused to be part of a potential swap deal for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.
West Ham remain interested in Zouma, but cannot afford the £25 million fee the Blues are demanding, and would struggler’s to meet the player’s wage demands.
Spurs, meanwhile, have reportedly drawn up a list of defenders to target, with Zouma on that list.
If a move doesn’t materialise before the August 31 deadline, the French international is also apparently happy to remain at Stamford Bridge, where he is currently under contract until 2023.
