BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) — Mauro Luna converted a second-half spot-kick as Union Santa Fe secured a 1-0 home victory over reigning champions River Plate in their Argentine Primera Division season opener on Saturday.

The former Boca Juniors youth team player held his nerve from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after Juan Nardoni was brought down by goalkeeper Franco Armani.

Union defended resolutely thereafter to inflict a rare defeat on Marcelo Gallardo’s men, who lost just three times en route to their 2021 Primera Division triumph.

Earlier, Huracan clinched a 1-0 home win over Lanus courtesy of a first-half strike from Matias Coccaro.

In Saturday’s only other Primera Division fixture, Mauro Boselli and Agustin Rogel scored second-half goals as hosts Estudiantes overcame Independiente 2-1. Joaquin Laso was on the scoresheet for the visitors.
