BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) — Striker Braian Romero scored twice as River Plate secured their first Argentine league title in seven years with a 4-0 home win over Racing Club on Thursday.

Agustin Palavecino gave the hosts the lead by slotting home a low effort after an Enzo Fernandez through ball.

Julian Alvarez, reportedly a target of Real Madrid and Juventus, struck his 17th goal in 18 matches just after halftime, side-footing a first-time shot into the far corner.

Romero completed the rout with two cool finishes in quick succession after having only the goalkeeper to beat on both occasions.

The result at the Monumental stadium means Marcelo Gallardo’s men now hold a 12-point lead over second-placed Defensa y Justicia with three match days remaining in the Primera Division season.

“It was a great night, we have had a fantastic championship,” veteran midfielder Enzo Perez said. “It is an immense joy to be celebrating this Argentine championship that for several reasons we hadn’t been able to win.”

Gallardo has now won 13 trophies since taking over as manager in 2014, a tally that includes seven international titles and five domestic cups.
