TalkSport pundit Jason Cundy has expressed his concern over the form of Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli.
Having been one of the more productive players in the Tottenham team from 2015-2018, things have gone off the boil for the 25-year-old in recent seasons, not helped by being ostracised from the team by former boss Jose Mourinho that saw him score just three goals all season in 2020/21, all in the Europa League.
He has managed to get back into the team this season, starting all of the club’s Premier League games under Nuno Espirito Santo, but speaking about his overall play on TalkSport, Cundy felt that something still doesn’t look right with him:
“Dele Alli has lost the spark, he has, he’s lost something.
“I just wonder whether he’s just, he’s lost a bit of confidence with what happened with Jose, he’s lost his place in England team, he’s seen players overtake him, players that hadn’t even made their professional debuts when he was playing for England. I’m thinking the likes of Mason Mount, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham. He is now way down the pecking order.
“His game has gone, it really has. And I feel for him, I genuinely feel for him because you can see when he got taken off [against NS Mura], he got taken off the weekend at half time against Arsenal, got taken off after 58 minutes tonight and he went down the tunnel. I just think he’s lost his way, he needs an arm around him.”
TIF Thoughts on Jason Cundy’s comments about Dele Alli at Tottenham Hotspur…
Have you had enough of Dele Alli?
Yes
No
It certainly hasn’t been the greatest few years for Alli and the lack of playing time could arguably be a pretty big factor in it all, limiting his opportunities to really get settled into the team the way he was earlier on in his Spurs career.
Having already got two-thirds of his goal return from last season, even if they have both been penalties, hopefully that will give him the confidence to kick on this season. At 25, there is still plenty of time for him to turn his career around, it’s not as if he’s on the verge of turning 30 and in the ‘last legs’ territory when it comes to playing time.
So whilst Cundy might not be too high on him, it is perhaps a bit too early in the new regime for him to be so negative about Alli’s time at the club, and perhaps those judgements should be reserved for later on in the season.
