Paul Scholes praised Mikel Arteta for the part he played in Arsenal scoring their third goal against Watford on Sunday at Vicarage Road, as he told Premier League Productions.
The Arsenal boss ran from his technical area, picked the ball up as it was going to go out for a throw-in, chucked it straight at Bukayo Saka, before watching his side play some outstanding one-touch football and scoring via Gabriel Martinelli’s outstanding finish.
Even though Arteta’s playing days are over, it was a lovely assist from the former midfielder because his quick-thinking play caught Watford out.
Given that Roy Hodgson’s side pulled a goal back through Moussa Sissoko late on, that Martinelli strike proved to be the difference-maker.
Even though Scholes questioned whether Arteta was allowed to come out of his technical area like that, he loved what he was seeing.
“He (Arteta) started that off, didn’t he,” said Scholes. “Arteta can definitely sense something that is happening.
“Watford aren’t quite in their shape. He runs down the line. Out of his technical area, is he allowed to do that? I am not too sure.
“But he definitely plays a big part in that.”
Arsenal are now in a commanding position in the Premier League table and fourth spot is well and truly in their hands.
After Manchester United were thrashed 4-1 at Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, Arteta’s side are one point ahead of the fifth-placed side.
But what makes things even better is that they have three games in hand, including on sixth-placed West Ham, who they are three points ahead of.
Whilst seventh-placed Tottenham have played the same number of games as their north London rivals, Arsenal are six points ahead, so the ball is well and truly in their court.
