Arsenal keen on Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic

Arsenal are interested in signing Real Madrid misfit Luka Jovic as the striker has expressed his desire to leave the Spanish club next year.

Luka Jovic, 23, has flopped badly at Real Madrid ever since arriving on a €60 million deal from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2019. Injuries and form have not helped the Serbian international at Santiago Bernabeu, limiting him to just 38 La Liga appearances, in which he has registered a paltry two goals and three assists to date.

The striker spent the second half of last season back on loan with his former club Eintracht Frankfurt in a bid to resurrect his career but he was unable to replicate the form that made him a star at the Waldstadion, adding only four goals in 18 Bundesliga outings.

Back to Madrid following the expiry of his loan with the Bundesliga club, Jovic has found game time hard to come by under new manager Carlo Ancelotti this season, managing only five La Liga appearances. He has done nothing to live up to the lofty billing and expectations at Los Blancos, who are willing to cut their costs in January itself as they plan for a big move for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland next summer.

Arsenal are understood to be keen on the Serbian international as he wants to leave Real as soon as possible due to lack of game time under Carlo Ancelotti.

Alexandre Lacazette to leave Arsenal

Alexandre Lacazette’s contract expires at the end of the season, when he’ll leave the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer. At the moment, the 30-year-old striker doesn’t look like extending his stay with the Gunners.

In January, the Frenchman will be able to talk with clubs outside England and even sign a pre-contract agreement to join without a fee next summer. Lacazette clearly doesn’t look a part of Mikel Arteta’s plans going forward due to poor performances in the last two years, with only two appearances so far this term a testimony of the Arsenal manager’s lack of faith in him.

Should Arsenal take a punt on Luka Jovic?

Luka Jovic is targeted by Arsenal as a potential replacement for Lacazette. The 23-year-old’s move to Real Madrid hasn’t worked out but one must not forget his exploits in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he netted 25 goals in 54 outings (excluding last season’s numbers on loan)

The 23-year-old still has a lot of time to become an even better player, and his aforementioned numbers for his former club Eintracht Frankfurt during his time in Germany shows that he has the knack for finding the back of the net consistently. Adding another centre-forward would also hand Mikel Arteta the freedom to go with two up top at Arsenal when required, while the Serbian could be a quality option to have from the bench initially.

To put things into perspective, Arsenal’s links with Jovic may not go down well with the fans but the 23-year-old will prove to be a handy addition to the squad in the wake of Lacazette’s potential departure next year. Thus, the Serbian is certainly worth a punt and the north London giants must offer him an escape route from Real Madrid in the January transfer window itself.
