Stories to Watch:
The Road to Playoffs
Eight games remain in the 2021 Major League Soccer regular season and RSL is currently sitting in seventh place, just above the playoff line with 36 points. Wednesday’s opponent, LA Galaxy is in fifth place with 38 points, while Minnesota United sits in between the two with 37 points. A win over the Galaxy would see RSL jump into sixth place and a win with a Minnesota loss or draw would see the team move into fifth place. With a draw from RSL and a loss from Minnesota they would also move into sixth place based on goal differential.
Protect the House
With just eight games remaining, its four remaining home matches are of the utmost importance in solidifying a position in the playoff picture. This season RSL has earned a 7-2-4 record at Rio Tinto Stadium good for 25 points at home. The team has the fourth best home record in the Western Conference, but are just one point shy of tying Sporting Kansas City, Minnesota and Portland for the top spot. If RSL can win its remaining home matches, it would have 48 points with 12 points remaining on the table, giving the team the best chance at securing one of the seven playoff spots in the Western Conference.
An Important Night
Wednesday’s game will celebrate the members of the Hispanic community, including 10 players from RSL. The 10 players represent seven different countries, including Argentina (Jonathan Menéndez, Pablo Ruiz) Cuba (Maikel Chang), Ecuador (Anderson Julio), Honduras (Douglas Martinez), Mexico (Chris Garcia, David Ochoa, Rubio Rubin) Uruguay (Marcelo Silva) and Venezuela (Jeizon Ramirez).
Connections: Following his retirement from professional soccer in 2008, LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney joined the RSL Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona where he served as the technical director from 2008-2011.
Former RSL Homegrown defender Danilo Acosta now plies his trade with the Galaxy where he signed prior to the 2020 season. While with RSL, the left back made 29 appearances in MLS to accompany 26 appearances in the USL Championship.
Interim Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni played his final MLS season with the Galaxy in 2013.
