Gimnasia beat Independiente to go top in Argentine Primera Division

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) — Gimnasia rose to the top of Argentina’s Primera Division standings on Saturday with a 3-1 home victory over Independiente.

Leonardo Fernandez gave the visitors the lead with an 11th-minute strike but the hosts proceeded to dominate thereafter.

Benjamin Dominguez equalized with a 33rd minute strike before Leonardo Morales and Leonardo Contin added two more goals early in the second half.

The result leaves Gimnasia with 33 points from 17 matches, a point ahead of second-placed Atletico Tucuman, who have a game in hand. Independiente are 25th in the 28-team standings with 15 points.

In other Primera Division fixtures on Saturday, Racing Club won 1-0 at home to Argentinos Juniors, Newell’s Old Boys clinched a 1-0 victory at Velez Sarsfield, Sarmiento prevailed 2-1 at Aldosivi, Tigre won 2-1 at Lanus and Rosario Central secured a 1-0 home win over Talleres Cordoba.
