Arsenal have been told to keep an eye on Serie A striker Tammy Abraham, despite the Englishman recently being given a massive £100million price tag.
Abraham left Chelsea for Roma in August, shortly after the Blues’ club-record signing of Romelu Lukaku. Abraham did not see himself getting regular game time at Stamford Bridge, and his decision to leave has been more than justified.
The 24-year-old is enjoying a brilliant debut season in Rome, having found the net 23 times in 40 matches thus far. That includes two goals in Roma’s derby victory over Lazio on Sunday.
Abraham’s impressive record puts him ahead of deadly forward Gabriel Batistuta when it comes to Roma goals in a debut season.
Chelsea reportedly included a £67million buy-back clause when selling the England international to Jose Mourinho’s side. It becomes active next summer and gives Chelsea first refusal to complete a deal.
Recent reports claim Arsenal and Manchester United harbour interest in Abraham. Should one of those two clubs come calling, then Roma will demand an astonishing £100m.
Nigel Winterburn hails Tammy Abraham
Nevertheless, Gunners legend Nigel Winterburn – who made over 500 appearances at Highbury – reckons Mikel Arteta and Edu may swoop in. However, Winterburn also cast doubt over whether Abraham would want to leave Roma.
The former left-back said (via the Daily Mail): “Back in the summer when he was moving, there was a link with Arsenal, I don’t know how strong. But he fits into the bill of what Arsenal were trying to do.
“A young player with huge potential. So my opinion doesn’t change that he would have been a great option for Arsenal.
“I would suggest that if he’s enjoying himself, then he wouldn’t want to move. He’s playing regular football, so I don’t feel like he would move back to England next season.
Star’s situation compared with Nicolas Anelka
“I don’t see why he would move back. Sometimes when you move and get that freedom, that game time you wanted and scoring goals it does wonders for you.
“I always remember Arsene Wenger saying that Nicolas Anelka felt he moved two years too early.
“I’m not expecting Tammy Abraham to move, someone’s taken a chance on him and he’s repaying that faith.
“But let’s wait and see, I imagine he’ll be looked at because he’s young and someone who will be on a upwards trajectory, so there’s always going to be interest.”
Abraham had been in line for an England cap after making Gareth Southgate’s recent squad. However, he had to pull out due to a lower back injury.
