Former Rangers striker Kenny Miller has tipped Nathan Patterson to make Scotland’s right-wingback role his own as he called the player ‘tailor-made’ for it.
The 19-year-old performed well in that position during the national team’s 1-0 win over Moldova in September, with his burst forward playing a part in creating Lyndon Dykes’ goal.
However, he then had to withdraw from the squad ahead of the important 1-0 win in Austria.
But Miller, who has 69 caps and 18 goals for Scotland, has been raving about the player and hopes he will become a mainstay in Steve Clarke’s team for years to come.
“I’d love to see Nathan Patterson really nail that right wing-back slot,” he said on the Go Radio Football Show.
“I think it’s tailor made for him the way he plays the game. He’s up and down.
“His energy is great, his quality is good as well. You saw that at the weekend, with the cross for Roofe’s header.
“He’s got all the attributes to really fill that role and he could be in that role for a number of years.”
The talented fullback was the subject of two bids from Everton late in the transfer window, while Manchester United are the latest club linked with a potential move.
Patterson has found consistent game time at Ibrox difficult as he competes with James Tavernier but he played well during Rangers’ win over Hibs at the weekend.
He’s now away with the Scotland squad for games against Israel and the Faroe Islands and is likely to add to his three caps.
