Rangers team news v Malmo revealed as Steven Gerrard hands Cedric Itten big chance

[ad_1]

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has named his team to face Malmo.

It’s the first Champions League qualifier of the season for the Ibrox men and they travel to Sweden to take on the side who beat them back in 2011.

That was the last time Rangers played in the Champions League and it’s exactly 10 years since Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra were sent off in a disappointing night for the Premiership champions.

But now they are looking to get back into the big time and it starts with the trip to Sweden, with Filip Helander going up against his old side.

There’s plenty of issues for Gerrard with Glen Kamara, Kemar Roofe and Leon Balogun all suspended for this one.

Balogun will return for the second leg but the other two are out for next week as well and it means Gerrard had some decisions to make.

Allan McGregor returns in goals after sitting out the league opener and he has a back four of James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Helander and Borna Barisic in front of him.

The midfield sees Steven Davis joined by John Lundstram and Scott Arfield with Kamara dropping out from Saturday’s win.

Ianis Hagi was a doubt for this one after picking up a knock and he’s only fit enough for the bench.

It means it’s a front three of Scott Wright, Cedric Itten and Ryan Kent.

Full team:McGregor, Tavernier, Goldson, Helander, Barisic, Davis, Lundstram, Arfield, Wright, Itten, Kent

Subs: McCrorie, Hogarth, Bassey, Hagi, Simpson, Patterson, Kelly, Sakala, Lowry
