Peru dominated the 2022 Sunfish World Championships, topping the results overall along with victories in the women’s and grand masters’ classifications, with racing held September 6-10 in Torbole sul Garda, Italy.
Jean Paul De Trazegnies easily won the World title, posting all top ten scores to take victory by 32 points over David Hernandez (GUA). Caterina Romero was second for much of the event before slipping to fourth but easily outdistancing the next woman. Also among those aged 60-68, Alex Zimmermann won a race en route to his victory.
Ninety-four competitors completed 10 races in very varied conditions, first with medium-light southerly winds and then with gusty, stronger northerly winds, especially on the last day. The Peruvian mastered the variety, discarding a tenth while winning three races. This was his second world title, previously winning in 2018.
The northerly wind of the last two days compromised the final overall result of the other Peruvian, Caterina Romero, slipping in the last four races. Romero did well in the medium-light wind, but with the violent gusts from the north she was unable to maintain the pace of the first days.
