Not even NASCAR has gone to F1 extremes in ‘adapting’ late-race rules

Was NASCAR paying attention to that Formula One finale?

Talk about making up the rules as you go along, F1’s referees not only went a bit rogue at the end of Sunday’s race, but at the very end of the season, with the championship basically decided by a controversial judgment call. A highly controversial judgment call, that is.

And that one, benefitting eventual champ Max Verstappen, book-ended a highly controversial judgment call on the very first lap benefitting seven-time champ and 2021 runner-up Lewis Hamilton.

NASCAR could actually send them a friendly suggestion regarding red flags and green/white/checker finishes. While not always perfectly handled, it sure beats how those high-falutin’ F1 boys run a show.

It’s really happening at Rockingham, isn’t it?

Yeah, let’s assume the Rock isn’t getting all dressed up with nowhere to go. Or, more accurately, no one to host.

Previous reports were confirmed over the weekend: The high-banked one-miler is getting $9 million in state funds to add lights and put down new asphalt. NASCAR left Rockingham in 2004.

Many considered it the perfect stock-car track — built for speed but not built too big. The earlier reports also included talk of resuscitating North Wilkesboro’s historic half-mile track, so more news on that is likely coming.

Overall, no one is talking eventual destinations yet, but we’re liking the route so far.
