Both Newcastle United and West Ham United are still pushing to agree a deal to sign Jesse Lingard in the closing hours of the January transfer window.
The Englishman has been out of favour at Old Trafford this term and looked almost certain to depart this month, however a deal is yet to materialise and the Hammers and Magpies now face a race against time to sign the midfielder.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that both clubs remain keen on a potential deal, having previously reported that the player himself told manager Ralf Rangnick of his intentions to leave as recently as this morning.
Lingard made a loan move to West Ham this time last year and scored nine goals in his first ten league games for the club.
Lingard hasn’t started a single Premier League game so far this season
He returned to Manchester over the summer to fight for his place, however his only two starts so far this season have come in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, and he has amassed just 89 minutes of Premier League action.
That has seen him heavily linked with a move away, and Newcastle have been touted as a possible destination.
The Magpies have been the most active Premier League club during this window, having finalised moves for Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes, and they now look close to securing the services of Dan Burn from Brighton.
While Lingard has told United of his desire to leave today, it is not yet clear which of the two interested clubs he would prefer to join.
The saga is likely to be one that rumbles on into the closing hours of the window, with both clubs willing to work hard to secure a deal before Monday evening’s 11pm deadline.
