Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has been speaking on his latest YouTube video to discuss the latest news at the north London club.
Since the arrival of Antonio Conte last week, Gold has been discussing the current batch of Spurs players and who could potentially see their game time increase.
Will Doherty become a starter under Conte?

One of the players discussed was Matt Doherty, who signed for the Lilywhites in the summer of 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and has so far failed to nail down a consistent spot in the starting XI (via Transfermarkt).
The Irishman did feature under Conte at the weekend in the Italian’s first league game in charge as he came on as a substitute for the final 19 minutes of the game against Everton.
Discussing how the 29-year-old may find more joy with Conte now in charge of the north London club, Gold had the following to say on what the future could bring for Doherty.
“Ironically, his former Wolves manager came in and wasn’t really of any benefit to him, in terms of he didn’t change the system, things like that. But then he goes, and Antonio Conte comes in, and returns Doherty – essentially he will do – to a wing-back role when he plays.
“Which is huge, because that’s the role where Doherty made his name. I used this stat when Spurs signed him: when Spurs signed him, in the previous two seasons, only Trent Alexander-Arnold had created more chances as a right-sided defender than Matt Doherty.
“And he would score goals as well; I remember he scored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as well. So I’d be really intrigued to see, if he can get the fitness levels that Conte requires, Matt Doherty could end up having a bit of a renaissance as a wing-back.”

We certainly agree with Gold. We feel under Conte, Doherty will be given the opportunity to prove his worth which we do not think was the case with Nuno Espirito Santo as the Irishman featured for just seven minutes in the opening 10 games under Conte’s predecessor.
Conte is known for playing with a three-man defence and two wing-backs. The Italian has already played with this type of formation in the opening two games of his tenure.
During his time at Wolves, Doherty often played as a right wing-back, however, since arriving at Spurs he has played predominantly as a right-back. Could the arrival of Conte’s three-man defence see the Irishman return to the form he showed at Molineux? Only time will tell.
