Werner opens the scoring in the semi

Timo Werner was in the right place at the right time for Chelsea to give them a 1-0 lead against Real Madrid.

Kai Havertz’s dink over Thibaut Courtois went agonisingly close to going in, instead clipping the crossbar, but Werner was on hand to head in the rebound. Showing off the striking instincts which earned him the move to west London.

It was clear from his celebrations that he was indeed in a state of raw relief and euphoria.

What has Tuchel said about Werner?

Coach Thomas Tuchel has spoke about protecting the German international because of his fragile mental state from having such a poor season.

“I’m afraid you [might] lose him for the rest of the season. He looked so done in Madrid, not scoring goals,” he explained.

“He keeps doing very interesting things; the assist that he gave, keeping the ball and winning a free-kick at the edge of the box [in the Fulham win].

“He lacks confidence but he keeps on trying. He doesn’t give up, and I like the fact that he still tries everything.

“I think, against players like Varane, for example, you need somebody smaller who can disturb him and be fast.”

The surprising Werner stat

An interesting statistic has emerged regarding the German forward after his goal this evening.

The former RB Leipzig man is the first player since Eden Hazard to be involved in 10+ goals and assists for the club.

Granted, he is 16 goal contributions behind the Belgian who he faced off against in this evening’s semi-final.

However, with the most contributions of all his teammates this season, especially considering the expensive quality in the side, Werner could possibly be less harsh on himself.
