Thiago Silva will remain at Chelsea next season after the club exercised their right to extend his deal by a further year.
The Brazilian arrived at Stamford Bridge on a free transfer last summer, having left Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain after just shy of a decade at the club.
Silva made 23 Premier League appearances in his debut season in England, helping Chelsea in their quest to secure a top-four finish.
The 36-year-old suffered a groin injury in the Blues’ Champions League final win over Manchester City and was visibly upset at having to leave the field in what could have been in his final appearance for the club.
However, Chelsea have now taken to their official website to confirm the Brazil international will remain at Stamford Bridge next season.
“Following the Champions League final, Chelsea Football Club has exercised an option to extend Thiago Silva’s contract by one year, taking his time at Stamford Bridge into a second season,” the statement read.
“The Brazilian’s first Chelsea campaign could scarcely have gone much better. A composed and classy influence in the heart of our defence from the moment he arrived on a free transfer from PSG, Thiago Silva featured 34 times in all competitions and scored twice.”
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia also provided a short statement, revealing her delight that Silva would remain at the club next season.
“When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad,” her statement read. “Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.
“We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League this weekend. We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.”
