The best alternatives to Haaland – Talk Chelsea

Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland has been linked with a move to both Chelsea and Manchester City, among other clubs this summer.

The 20-year-old is considered one of the best strikers in the world despite his young age and is alongside Kylian Mbappe in being considered the long-term replacements for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in battling for the Ballon d’Or season after season.

Haaland has only been with Borussia Dortmund for a season-and-a-half, meaning he will cost a hefty sum to tempt the German giants into accepting a bid so early in his contract. The Bundesliga club are unlikely to cash in on him this summer either, following Jadon Sancho’s impending transfer to Manchester United. The club don’t tend to sell two of its top players in the same transfer window.

Although Haaland is believed to be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, a move is looking unlikely this summer. Should we miss out on the Norwegian international, here are the best alternatives that could be available to us:

Gerard Moreno

Gerard Moreno has been prolific in La Liga for four of the past five seasons and is coming off of a league campaign where he scored 23 goals in only 33 appearances as well as winning the Europa League.

The 29-year-old has only recently been part of the Spanish national team squad and is coming off a below par Euro 2020 campaign that saw him fail score in five appearances (2 starts).

At club level Moreno certainly knows how to find the back of the net and could be an immediate starter at Stamford Bridge after Timo Werner missed opportunity after opportunity we created for him last season.

Villarreal can expect some offers for their striker this summer, as the Independent reported a link to Gerard Moreno last month as the back-up plan should we fail to sign Haaland.

Romelu Lukaku

In a somewhat surprising transfer rumour, Romelu Lukaku has been linked with a move back to West London. The Belgian star was with us as a youngster between 2011-14 before Jose Mourinho sold him onto Everton without ever really giving him a chance.

A below spell at Manchester United has been followed up by being named as Serie A Player of the Season as he helped Internazionale win the Scudetto this past campaign. Anyone placing a bet on the top goalscorer at renowned bookie – Betfair 12 months ago got a good price on Lukaku. And he could be the favourite heading into next season’s Serie A.

However, Antonio Conte has already resigned as manager and been replaced by Simone Inzaghi. This a result of the former Blues boss being told he must sell first-team players. Could Lukaku be one of those moved on? Or could he force his way out of the club?

The disruption at the Milan club has already seen Juventus become the bookmakers’ favourites to regain the title next season.

Danny Ings

The Southampton striker narrowly missed out on a call up to the England squad for Euro 2020 off the back of an excellent Premier League campaign. A move away from the south coast looks inevitable after recently rejecting a new contract.

Danny Ings is now in the final 12 months of his contract with the Saints leaving the club with a decision to make this summer – do they cash in on him or let him leave on a free transfer at the end of next season?

Ings could be a less-expensive option for us and one who can still link up with Werner – not replace him. The German is equally adept at playing out on the left to support the main striker, as he showed in forming a good partnership with Kai Havertz at the end of last season.
