Signing free agents might become more frequent for Chelsea this summer – Talk Chelsea

Chelsea have been heavily linked to signing Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona today, with various reports now confirming it.

Little plug here, I exclusively reported the story on my website, Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, yesterday. Then there was a further few reports from others such as L’Equipe today confirming my report.

The links have been met with mixed reactions from Chelsea fans, as is always the case. But one thing for sure is that we might need to get used to being linked with signing free agents, and to be honest, I think that’s a good thing.

Dembele could still sign a new contract with his club, but if he doesn’t, getting him for no fee in the summer isn’t a bad idea at all. The only downer would be his high wage demands, which makes this a valid debate.

However, with Chelsea reporting their highest ever financial losses for the year, getting players without having to fork out high fees may well become quite appealing to the club moving forward into the summer transfer window.

We also need to factor in that as it stands, we need to replace three current defenders of our own, with none of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, or Cesar Azpilicueta looking any closer to extending their deals with the club. So we might well need any transfer budget we will have this summer to be invested into our defence.

So then for example, if we want to add any more flair and creativity into our attack as well, we might have to genuinely think about a player such as Dembele if he becomes a free agent. I mean, this is even without mentioning how much Thomas Tuchel likes him and how much he likes Tuchel, having worked together at Dortmund.

But there could be others as well who we might see become genuine Chelsea targets if they become free agents this summer, because it’s not a bad idea at all to add quality to our squad without having to pay a bulk fee to sign them. It may well be a sign of the times right now fresh after a global pandemic.

Chelsea will be just fine financially of course, but yes, it wouldn’t hurt to be searching for a couple of free agents for certain areas when we might need to spend elsewhere this summer.
