Terms agreed with Marseille/Arsenal holding out

Matteo Guendouzi

An update on the future of Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been forthcoming in the French media on Sunday.

Hertha stint

Guendouzi was of course granted permission to depart Arsenal last summer.

This came with the Frenchman having been frozen out by Mikel Arteta, after being accused of taunting Brighton’s stars over finances during a defeat at the Amex back in June.

Guendouzi made the move to Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin, for the 2020/21 campaign.

To say that his time in the German capital subsequently proved hit-and-miss, though, would be putting it lightly.

At one point in the season, the midfield talent had actually established himself as a key performer at the base of Hertha’s midfield, starting week-in, week-out, and even chipping in with the occasional goal:

Recent months, however, proved of an altogether more testing nature for Guendouzi.

On the back of a change on the bench at the Olympiastadion, Arsenal’s midfield loanee fell out of favour, as Pal Dardai opted for the likes of Lucas Tousart and Sami Khedira to man Hertha’s midfield ranks, amid a tense battle against the drop.

Then, just when it appeared as though Guendouzi had wrestled back favour, confirmation was forthcoming that the 22-year-old had been ruled out for the final weeks of the season, with a metatarsal fracture:

Marseille latest

In turn, with Hertha now altogether unlikely to make Guendouzi’s arrival a permanent one, the youngster, as things stand, is set to link back up with Arsenal ahead of next season.

Such an outcome would of course be unfavourable for club and player alike, with Mikel Arteta altogether unlikely to reintegrate his one-time midfield star back into the Gunners’ first-team ranks.

As such, a move elsewhere – which would provide Arsenal with added funds to utilise in their own transfer efforts – looks an increasing possibility.

And, if the latest word stemming from his home country of France is anything to go by, then one club appear ready to do whatever it takes to land Guendouzi ahead of next season.

As per a report from Le10Sport, the board at Ligue 1 giants Marseille are pushing increasingly hard to find a deal with their counterparts in north London.

An agreement on the personal terms of a contract has already been found with Guendouzi, with those in a position of power at the Velodrome having therefore not been deterred, despite Arsenal’s unwavering demands.

It is suggested that the Londoners, labelled as ‘greedy’, are holding out for a fee well in excess of €10 million.

Negotiations, as a result, look set to drag on for weeks to come.
