Swansea 3-0 Cardiff: Swans run riot in South Wales derby to inflict SIXTH straight defeat on rivals

Perhaps Ken Choo will now be granted his wish and the Cardiff CEO can begin flicking through those CVs he collected before this south Wales Derby.

If this doesn’t spell the end for Mick McCarthy, you wonder how many more straws his back can take. Certainly this defeat, No 6 on the spin and at the home of their fiercest rivals, will do little to soften the mood of those Cardiff fans heading back down the M4.

Earlier Choo had boarded one of their buses. ‘Get a new manager,’ one supporter pleaded. ‘I wish we had a new manager,’ replied the Cardiff chief, who then wandered down the bus, allegedly asking for ‘new manager applications..’ Surely not? Well, Choo didn’t deny it. Instead he laughed the incident off.

A rather unsavoury circus, all told, in which Swansea basked to secure the biggest win of Russell Martin’s early tenure.

Before this, only points difference separated these sides near the foot of the Championship. Make that a three-point lead which, on this evidence, will only grow.

Jamie Paterson inspired Swansea, scoring one stunner and brilliantly creating two more – for Joel Piroe and Jake Bidwell.

Penny for Choo’s thoughts now. Very few owners would be persuaded that six successive defeats warrant much stay of execution.

Even fewer Cardiff fans could present many mitigating factors as their side have shipped 18 goals (and scored once) in that time. Even if the visitors did enjoy some early glimmers here.

Kieffer Moore laid on a glorious early chance for Ryan Giles, who fired straight at Ben Hamer, before Moore was denied by Hamer, too.

The striker’s movement troubled Kyle Naughton early on and at the other end, Cardiff’s own rearguard – made up of five centre backs – largely kept the home side at bay.

True, they had the absence of video technology to thank for an early penalty reprieve, when Curtis Nelson looked to have felled Ethan Laird inside the area.

But Swansea barely created a clear chance until Paterson’s stunner on the half hour. The goal, much to McCarthy’s visible frustration, stemmed from a wasteful kick from Alex Smithies.

The goalkeeper’s error invited pressure and Smithies needed to be down brilliantly to deny Piroe moments later. Alas, almost immediately, Paterson curled a shot from 25 yards which hit one post, then then other, before crossing the line.

That sparked bedlam on the Swansea bench – where Martin was engulfed in a group bear hug – and indecision in the stands.

First Swansea supporters warned McCarthy that he would be sacked in the morning. Then they pleaded with him to stay.

All that was certain? Cardiff needed to break with tradition to turn this around. They haven’t scored a first-half league goal since May 1; no side has come from behind to score in a South Wales derby since 2010.

Breaking those ducks would have been simpler had the visitors kept the ball.. Or taken the chances they did create. Unfortunately, Swansea enjoyed 74 per cent of the ball more Cardiff opportunities went begging after the break, too.

Aden Flint saw an effort deflected; Curtis Nelson missed a glorious headed chance. Cardiff paid the price on the hour, when a brilliant reverse ball by Paterson found Piroe. As defenders demanded offside, He calmly lifted the ball over Smithies.

For Swansea, there was only time to add salt to wounds and, 16 minutes from time, Paterson cheekily lobbed the ball over Smithies for Jake Bidwell to bundle the ball home. And pile further pressure on McCarthy – if that was possible.
