Sunderland could explore free agents

Sunderland missed out on completing deals on deadline day but not all is lost for the Black Cats as a new update has emerged from the club that could mean their transfer business is not finished.

What’s the latest?

Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has revealed that Sunderland could take a look at the free agent market after struggling to secure their late deals.

Speaking on the deadline day failure, Tony Mowbray claimed: “We worked pretty hard and had some balls rolling until about 8/9 o’clock which didn’t work for us.”

However, Speakman gave an insight into the potential of looking at some free agents (via Chronicle Live): “We are not picking at the free agent market like ‘we’ve got to find a player’,”

“Naturally, we’ll pick it up like we did last year and see who is available, but we don’t need any [more] players. At the same time, we are always vigilant and if we can improve, then we’ll always want to improve.”

Fantastic news for Mowbray

It is certainly fantastic news for new manager Mowbray that the club are committed to strengthening the team and are willing to explore the free agent market if the opportunity to add another quality player arises over the coming days and weeks ahead.

Sunderland unexpectedly lost their manager Alex Neil after he made a move to Stoke City over the last week of the transfer window, but the club have been left in a great position after a promising start in the Championship since being promoted and secured a 3-0 win over Rotherham this week under their new manager.

The Black Cats are currently eighth in the table after picking up three wins, two draws and two defeats so far, and Mowbray will be able to continue his great first impression when they take on Middlesbrough in the Tees-Wear derby on Monday night.

Do Sunderland need more signings?

Yes

No

No

There are a number of incredible free agents still available on the market if Sunderland want to aim high by adding some Premier League experience to their team with Ross Barkley, Adel Taarabt and Fabian Delph still looking for a club to call home this summer.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see if Sunderland do make some late moves for one or more free agents this summer, as the right signing could give them a big boost in their dreams of back-to-back promotions for a top-flight return.
