Stephens dissects ‘frustrating’ draw | Southampton FC

Southampton defender Jack Stephens described a frustrated dressing room at St Mary’s following a second successive 0-0 draw.

The returning Danny Ings had the ball in the West Ham net after just seven minutes, only for Saints to see their third goal in two games ruled out by VAR for offside.

An absent Ralph Hasenhüttl saw his side dominate possession for the majority of the game but failing to find the all-important winner against a resolute Hammers side.

Despite having a lot of the ball, the game ended 0-0 meaning Jack Stephens was amongst the back line who gained their second successive clean sheet.

“We’re happy with the two clean sheets over the past two days,” he said. “But two 0-0 draws are frustrating.

It’s a good point really but we would have liked to have got three points here tonight.

“We are a bit frustrated to be honest. The changing room is really disappointed. It’s a well-earned point, we’ve worked really hard there.

“We just didn’t create enough chances to win the game so it’s a little bit frustrating but we’ll take the point.

“I think it shows how far we’ve come that the teams are sitting off of us and giving us that respect. But on the flip side of it we need to be a bit better. Be a bit sharper, move the ball a little bit quicker.

“We need to really work hard to create these chances because every game in the Premier League is so tough. So we need to sharpen up in the passing a little bit, move it a bit quicker and hopefully then we can create a few better chances.”

“It was a little bit different not having the gaffer on the side-line but we have had constant contact with him all day in video calls, at half-time as well.

“He was still able to do his normal team talk and get his point across but I don’t think it had too much baring on the game or the result. Think he suffered a little bit more than we did because it must have been frustrating watching at home.”
