Southampton moving for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone next year is a “no-brainer”, says former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer, who played for both clubs.
According to The Athletic, Johnstone is high on Southampton’s shortlist as they look to bring in a new shot-stopper.
While Alex McCarthy is set to sign a new contract at St Mary’s, Fraser Forster is expected to depart next summer when his current deal runs out, making a move for another goalkeeper make sense.
Do you want to see Johnstone at St Mary’s?
Yes, please!
No thanks

And Palmer believes Johnstone is exactly the kind of No.1 the Saints should be looking at. He exclusively told TIF:
“Yes, it’s a no-brainer. I think a lot of clubs will be interested in him on a free. I mean, I still don’t understand why he’s not gone.
“If it’s true that they were only asking for 15 million for him, I think at 15 million that’s good business. That’s cheap in today’s market.”
Making the most saves in the Premier League last season (166), it is a surprise that no one really went all out for Johnstone and he remained at The Hawthorns.
Arsenal and West Ham’s loss, both said to have been interested in the 28-year-old, could end up being Southampton’s gain, though. It is definitely one to keep an eye on next summer or perhaps even in the January transfer window.
