BUENOS AIRES, June 11 (Xinhua) — River Plate forward Julian Alvarez has been drafted into Argentina’s squad for the Copa America in Brazil, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said on Friday.

The 21-year-old replaces Bayer Leverkusen’s Lucas Alario, who was cut after failing to recover from a thigh injury.

Alvarez made his Argentina debut against Chile in a World Cup qualifier last week, playing the last half hour of a 1-1 draw in Santiago del Estero.

The Copa America will be played in four Brazilian cities from June 13 to July 10.

The Albiceleste are due to begin their campaign against Chile on Monday at Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic stadium. Lionel Scaloni’s men will also meet Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay in the group stage.
