River Plate, Boca Juniors step up title challenge

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) — River Plate and Boca Juniors continued their resurgence in Argentina’s Primera Division on Sunday with respective victories over Barracas Central and Colon.

River eased to a 2-0 win home win courtesy of goals from Nicolas Cruz and Miguel Borja. Marcelo Gallardo’s men are now fourth in the 28-team standings with 29 points, four points behind leaders Gimnasia, who have a game in hand.

In the northeastern city of Santa Fe, Luca Langoni scored a 73rd-minute winner as Boca Juniors defeated Colon 2-1.

Norberto Briasco had put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute before Luis Miguel Rodriguez equalized by converting a 40th-minute penalty.

The result leaves Boca in fifth place, trailing River on goal difference, while Colon are 23rd with 18 points.

In other Primera Division fixtures on Sunday, Estudiantes drew 0-0 at Platense and Union Santa Fe held hosts Patronato to a goalless draw.
