Real Salt Lake Goalkeeper David Ochoa Named to Mexico National Team

June 6, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Real Salt Lake News Release

HERRIMAN, Utah – Real Salt Lake Homegrown goalkeeper David Ochoa has been named to the Mexico National Team for the CONCACAF Nations League Tournament.

This is the second call up to the senior Mexico National Team for Ochoa since he elected to request a one-time switch to represent the “El Tri.” Ochoa was recently selected to participate in the team’s friendly against Guatemala in April of this year, his first official camp with the senior squad. As a dual national, Ochoa had previously earned call ups to the United States Men’s National Team but did not make an appearance at the senior level. In October of 2021 Ochoa made his debut with the U-21 Mexico Youth National Team in a friendly match against Romania.

The second iteration of the tournament will see Mexico in Group A with Jamaica and Suriname. The winner of each group will earn automatic qualification to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup while also being entered into a four-team knockout competition, to be held in June of 2023, to determine the winner. In its inaugural year, Mexico fell to the United States in the final, loosing 3-2 on aggregate in 2020.

Mexico is set to face Suriname on Saturday, June 11 at 8:00 p.m. MT at Estadio Nuevo Corona, home of Santos Laguna of Liga MX. The team will then travel to National Stadium Independence Park in Jamaica to take on the “Reggae Boys” on Tuesday, June 14 at 6:00 p.m. MT.

Real Salt Lake is enjoying a brief break from competition, returning to the pitch on Saturday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m. MT where they will host the San Jose Earthquakes at Rio Tinto Stadium for the Club’s annual Juneteenth celebration. The team is in the midst of one of its brightest starts in Club history, amassing 25 points in 15 games. Nearing the midway point of the season, Real Salt Lake is currently in third place in the Western Conference, just four points out of Supporter’s Shield contention.
