Raphael Varane ‘very happy’ with terms Manchester United have offered but Premier League side are £20million short of Real Madrid’s transfer valuation for defender

Raphael Varane appears ready to join Manchester United this summer with the player ‘very happy’ with the terms he’s been offered, talkSPORT understands.

However, there’s a big problem as the Premier League side’s offer falls £20million short of what Real Madrid want.

Man United just missed out on signing Varane in 2011. Could it happen again?

talkSPORT’s transfer correspondent Alex Crook says he believes United value Varane at £40m but Real want £60m for the defender.

The centre-back, 28, is in the final year of his Bernabeu contract and would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a non-Spanish team in January with a view to leaving on a free next summer.

This transfer window could be the last chance for Real Madrid, who have already said goodbye to centre-back Sergio Ramos this summer, to get money for France international Varane.

Former captain Ramos left the Spanish capital after his contract expired on July 1. He has since joined Paris Saint-Germain, who have also been linked with Varane.

Ramos has previously flirted with the idea of joining United, though each time it was revealed to be a bargaining tool when it came to agreeing new terms on a contract.

However, according to Spanish radio show El Transistor, Varane has apparently allayed any fears he is using the Premier League giants to do the same.

Meanwhile, Man United are looking to bolster their defence and see Varane as a partner at centre-back to record signing Harry Maguire.

Varane brings a wealth of success with him having won the Champions League four times, as well as three LaLiga titles and a Copa del Rey.

He was also part of the France squad that won the World Cup in 2018.

United have been busy in the summer already as it was revealed earlier this month that they will sign England star Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

The £73m transfer is expected to be announced imminently.
