BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) — Colombian midfielder Juan Fernando Quintero and Paraguayan defender Robert Rojas scored second-half goals as River Plate won 2-0 at Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina’s Primera Division on Sunday.
Quintero broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute by pouncing on an errant Ivan Arboleda clearance with a low first-time effort from 35 yards that rolled into an unguarded net.
Rojas doubled the lead three minutes later with a powerful shot that rebounded in off Arboleda’s left arm.
The result left River Plate second in the Group A standings with six points from three matches, while Newell’s fell to seventh, three points further back.
Meanwhile, Carlos Izquierdoz and Frank Fabra were on target as Boca Juniors clinched a 2-1 home victory over Rosario Central. Luca Martinez pulled a late goal back for the visitors.
Also on Sunday, Platense won 2-0 at home to Sarmiento courtesy of goals from Gonzalo Bergessio and Rodrigo Contreras.
