PSG v Montpellier Live Commentary & Result, 25/09/2021, Ligue 1

31′ Sambia has a sight at goal from the right corner of the penalty area and hits a low, driven shot that Navas deals with comfortably.

29′ The set-piece is taken short to Neymar, but he’s dispossessed just ahead of the near post by a well-timed Ferri challenge.

28′ Gueye slices the Montpellier defence open with a pass out to the left for Mbappe, who gets onto the forward pass and opens himself up to curl an effort – which takes a touch off a defender to put it behind for a corner.

26′ Thuler appears to have injured his hamstring in an attempt to cover Mbappe and will need to be substituted off. It’s a blow for Montpellier, who introduce Cozza to replace him.

24′ Di Maria plays a leading pass into the penalty area for Mbappe to latch onto, but Thuler steps across in the nick of time to put the striker off and allows Omlin to collect the loose ball.

22′ With their record, Montpellier were always likely to concede a goal or two this evening against PSG. The question for Dall’Oglio is whether his side can keep pace with their free-scoring opponents. Savanier and Mollet have looked lively to start the match but they’ve not had any clear-cut chances as of yet.

20′ Gueye brings Ferri down in midfield, catching the Montpellier player’s ankle with his studs. The goalscorer won’t be booked – though he could have been with his challenge occurring right in front of the referee.

18′ PSG have won six of their last seven Ligue 1 games against Montpellier (L1), as many as in their previous 17 (D9 L2).

16′ Having not built his career on a stellar scoring record, holding midfielder Gueye has netted three goals in his last six matches in Ligue 1. On the other two instances he’s found the back of the net, his side have gone on to finish the match with four goals.

14′ Di Maria’s intelligent layoff will go down as the assist for PSG’s opener.

PSG

14′ WHAT A HIT FROM GUEYE! 1-0 PSG! Mbappe leads the attack but his intended pass for Neymar is met with a deflection that takes it to Di Maria on the edge of the penalty area. The midfielder lays it off to Gueye, who sidesteps an opponent and fires an absolute thunderbolt that beats Omlin!

12′ Neymar’s short-corner routine finds Mbappe before it’s returned to the Brazil international. He looks to make something on the edge of the penalty area but his attempted cross is blocked by Mollet who was one of three covering defenders.

10′ Di Maria cuts inside from the right and looks to switch the play to Neymar, but the delivery from the Argentina international is lacking as it flies out for a Montpellier throw-in just ahead of their own penalty area.

9′ The second set-piece in quick succession is taken to the near post, where Marquinhos is able to make contact with it to put it out for a throw-in.

7′ Savanier’s corner from the right is taken towards Ristic on the edge of the penalty area, who volleys the ball at the first time of asking – winning a second corner, this time on the far side.

5′ CLOSE! Neymar breaks into the penalty area and drags the keeper off his line before executing a chip which goes over the goalkeeper but also over the crossbar.

3′ An incisive pass from Herrera gets Mbappe free on the left-wing, but the forward’s curled shot is blocked well by the retreating Sambia.

1′ PSG get the match underway from the kick-off!

Montpellier make three changes from the side that earned a 3-3 draw with Bordeaux last time out. Cozza is replaced by Sambia at left-back, while the introduction of Thuler for Souquet sees Ristic push out to right-back. The other swap is in midfield as Leroy is dropped for Chotard.

PSG make five changes to the XI that beat Metz in midweek. Diallo replaces Mendes at left-back, while wholesale changes in midfield see Herrera, Gueye and Paredes start over Wijnaldum, Pereira and Rafinha. The final alteration comes in attack, where Icardi makes way for Di Maria.

MONTPELLIER SUBS: Nicolas Cozza, Sepe Elye Wahi, Redouane Halal, Nicholas Gioacchini, Beni Makouana, Leo Leroy, Mathias Suarez, Arnaud Souquet, Dimitry Bertaud.

MONTPELLIER XI (4-2-3-1): Jonas Omlin; Junior Sambia, Maxime Esteve, Thuler, Mihailo Ristic; Jordan Ferri, Joris Chotard; Florent Mollet, Teji Savanier, Stephy Mavididi; Valere Germain.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides will be lining up – starting with our hosts!

With 15 goals scored in Ligue 1 so far, only PSG have outscored entertainers Montpellier, who are coming off the back of a dramatic 3-3 draw with Bordeaux. Sitting in 11th position at the start of play, Olivier Dall’Oglio’s side have failed to win in each of their last five meetings with Paris – since a 3-2 victory in 2019.

League-leading PSG are looking to put nine points between themselves and second-place Marseille with a win against Montpellier tonight. Back-to-back 90th minute victories against Lyon and Metz in the league means Mauricio Pochettino’s side are still perfect; seven wins in seven.
