Manchester City and Liverpool continued their winning ways on Premier League Week 17 to remain at the top of the standings. Chelsea failed to keep pace, though, with their title rivals as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at Stamford Bridge. The Blues now trail Manchester City by four points heading into Week 18.

Manchester City in seventh heaven after 7-0 thrashing of Leeds

Manchester City remained in sole possession of first place after a resounding 7-0 win over Leeds United on Wednesday. Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, John Stones, and Nathan Aké scored the goals for Manchester City, who recorded their biggest win of the season.

Foden opened the scoring in the eighth minute, converting the rebound after Rodri’s initial effort was thwarted by Leeds defender Stuart Dallas. Foden’s goal was a historic moment for City as that was their 500th goal in the Premier League under manager Pep Guardiola.

Grealish doubled Manchester City’s advantage just five minutes later, scoring a header off Mahrez’s cross. That goal was only his second in the Premier League since making a blockbuster £100m summer move from Aston Villa this past offseason. De Bruyne joined the scoring parade in the 32nd minute, blasting home City’s third goal after a fine pass from Rodri.

City piled on the pressure in the second half, scoring four more goals during this period. Mahrez made it 4-0 just four minutes after the restart, with his low shot deflecting in off Leeds’ Junior Firpo. De Bruyne then scored the best goal of the night, unleashing a thunderous strike from distance into the top corner to give City a 5-0 lead in the 62nd minute.

Stones’ rebound after Aymeric Laporte’s header was saved made it 6-0 for Manchester City in the 74th minute. Ake completed the rout in the 78th minute with a header from a corner kick by Foden.

Salah makes history in win over Newcastle

Liverpool kept pace with leaders Manchester City in the race for the league title, recording a 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Thursday. Mohamed Salah starred for the Reds, who moved to within a point of City in the team standings.

Salah continued his hot start to the season, scoring his 22nd goal of the 2021-22 campaign in the 25th minute that made it 2-1 for Liverpool. It was a historic goal for Salah, who equalled Jamie Vardy’s record of assisting or scoring in 15 consecutive Premier League games.

The victory did not come easy, though, for Liverpool as Newcastle grabbed a shock 1-0 lead in the seventh minute via a fine strike by Jonjo Shelvey. Newcastle’s lead did not last long with Diogo Jota scoring an equalizer in the 21st minute. Trent Alexander-Arnold sealed the win for Liverpool with a late goal in the 87th minute.
