Portugal star tells fans to ‘expect greatness’ from Cristiano Ronaldo at Euro 2020 and reveals hopes to face England ahead of potential mouth-watering last-16 tie

Cristiano Ronaldo may be 36 years old but the Portgual captain is being backed to bring ‘nothing else but greatness’ at Euro 2020.

The Juventus star was part of the Portugal side that became European champions in 2016.

Portugal shocked Europe as they lifted the Henri Delaunay trophy in France in 2016

He is still performing at the highest level five years on, with 36 goals in 44 appearances for his club in 2020/21.

And Ronaldo‘s international teammate, Jose Fonte, has fired a warning to fans and opponents ahead of the upcoming finals, which kick off on Friday.

“He’s our leader, our captain,” Fonte told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.

“As usual he’s preparing in the best way. He’s one of the best professionals around.

“The numbers speak for themselves. He’s still going, he’s still a beast, so expect nothing else but greatness.”

Many would agree that Portugal are a much more impressive outfit now than in their Euro 2016 campaign, but the tricky tests come straight away as they begin their title defence on June 15, LIVE on talkSPORT.

Portugal are in Group F, which has been dubbed the ‘group of death’ as it also features Germany and world champions France. Spare a thought for Hungary, who are also in the group alongside the giant trio.

Things may not get easier afterwards, either, with Portugal facing a potential last-16 showdown with England at Wembley, if the Three Lions finish top of their group and Ronaldo and co. come second in Group F.

But it’s bring on the group of death and England in the knockout stages as far as Fonte is concerned.

“We want to start well, we want to win games,” Fonte said. “Those are the fixtures that we have and we have to prepare in the best way that we can so we can attack these games and get what we want.

“I think it’s amazing. There are fantastic games to come, they are the games that everybody wants to play. If you want to win the title you’ve got to go through everybody.

On the prospect of playing England, Fonte added: “It would be great. On a personal level I’d love to play against England.

“I have fond memories from my time playing in the Premier League so what a great challenge it would be as England has a great squad as well.”
