Germany Thrash Latvia, Low Not Satisfied

Germany had six different goal scorers as they warmed up for the upcoming European Championships with a 7-1 rout of lowly Latvia in Dusseldorf on Monday.

The Germans raced to a 5-0 half-time lead with strikes from Robin Gosens, Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry and an own goal from Roberts Ozols.

Germany boss Joachim Low brought on Timo Werner for the impressive Kai Havertz along with Leroy Sane at the break and both netted in the second half, while Aleksejs Saveljevs netted a spectacular goal for the visitors.

Despite the win, Low was disappointed with the goal conceded, saying: “You can defend something like that better overall. That sort of thing shouldn’t normally happen.”

He added: “If you don’t pay attention in moments, don’t be vigilant – that’s exactly when our opponents punish you.

“We must keep your concentration high for over 90 minutes in every situation – that can certainly be improved.”

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer brought up his 100th for Germany in the game, marking a significant occasion for the Bayern Munich keeper.

Germany have a difficult pool at the 2020 Euros, alongside reigning European champions Portugal, reigning world champions France and Hungary.

Elsewhere in friendlies on Monday, Ukraine won 4-0 over Cyprus with Andriy Yarmolenko netting a double.

Ukraine are in Group C at the Euros alongside the Netherlands, Austria and North Macedonia.
