In a game that marked the “hangover” after eliminations in the Copa do Brasil, Palmeiras and Corinthians could only play out to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at the Alianz Parque. The game was valid for the third round of the Brazilian Championship.
Verdão opened the scoring right at the start, with Raphael Veiga in the fourth minute, while Timão tied in the second stage, with Gabriel who bagged a goal against his former side.
In the second half, Palmeiras also had a goal from Willian disallowed, as the VAR detected Ron’s offside early in the play. For the Brazilian Championship table, the tie still doesn’t make much difference.
A big talking point in the game was Gabriel scoring for the first time against Palmeiras since leaving the club in 2016.
Speaking after the game, the Corinthians goal-scorer said: “Of course I’m (accustomed to scoring), there are three goals in the year. Work, resilience and wisdom. This is the focus, the team is to be congratulated. We wanted to win, we played to win, we played a great game, we had a chance to be victorious, but we left with one point. The team surrendered, struggled, that’s the spirit.”
“It’s four points out of seven in the championship. Nine, sorry. We wanted more, but the team is to be congratulated. Now is looking for the victory against Bragantino at home. It’s another game of greatness. Sylvinho’s work is being done well, the team is organized, the chances of winning will be greater.”
Both sides will take to the pitch on Wednesday for the fourth round of the Brazilian Championship. Corinthians will host Red Bull Bragantino at Neo Química Arena, while Palmeiras will face Juventude in a later fixture on the same day.
