The man behind Leicester City’s miracle Premier League title Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as the new manager of newly promoted Watford.

The Hornets sacked Xisco Munoz earlier this week after they claimed seven points from their opening seven games following their return to the top flight.

Xisco had led Watford to promotion following his appointment in December, but became the latest boss to be sacked at Vicarage Road.

Ranieri is Watford’s 14th permanent appointment as manager since now Burnley boss Sean Dyche was dismissed in 2012.

Ranieri, who most recently managed Sampdoria, led Leicester to their improbable 2015-16 Premier League title, while he also was Chelsea boss from 2000 to 2004.

“Watford FC is delighted to confirm the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as the clubs new Head Coach, on a two-year contract,” the club statement read.

“The Italian arrives at Vicarage Road boasting a wealth of experience in charge of some of Europes biggest clubs, with Premier League, Coppa Italia and Copa del Rey titles among his managerial highlights.”

The 69-year-old has a long CV across European football, although Leicester remains his only major top flight league title. Ranieri led Valencia to the 1999 Copa del Rey and 2004 UEFA Super Cup.

He has also helped Cagliari, Fiorentina and Monaco win promotion back to their top divisions, which will suit Watford given their ambitions around survival.

“Ranieri will be joined at Watford by Assistant Coaches Paolo Benetti and Carlo Cornacchia, as well as Fitness Coach Carlo Spignoli,” the statement added.

“His first match in charge of the Hornets will be at home to Liverpool on Saturday October 16.”
