With their new Saudi owners, Newcastle’s exploits in the transfer market will be a major story to follow in January. As it stands, it appears that their first priority will be to strengthen their backline. Per Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle is looking to sign Lille centre back Sven Botman. The U21 Dutch international has been linked with Eddie Howe’s side, and the move could be made next month.

Botman joined Lille last season, and immediately became a crucial part of the Ligue 1- winning side. He has been touted as one of the best young defenders in the world, and has been linked with Italian giant AC Milan.

Lille is looking to sell in the transfer window, with the transfer of Jonathan Ikone to Fiorentina all but confirmed. With Lille’s monetary troubles well documented, the sale of Botman could be mutually beneficial.

Botman is valued at around 40 million pounds, which means that a move for him could potentially be a record signing for the club. But the major move could be worth it.

It is clear to see that Newcastle needs defensive reinforcement.

Newcastle is currently mired in a relegation battle, as they sit in 19th place. They have conceded 41  goals, the most in the Premier League.

They have been able to produce goals, with players such as Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson having solid seasons. The club looks to be focused on bringing in centre-back help, as they have contacted Burnley regarding James Tarkowski and Ben Mee, potentially as backup options if the Botman move falls through.

If Newcastle wants to begin a new era, they would be keen to build a solid core of young defenders. Sven Botman could be the first piece of the new generation at St. James’ Park.

With a heated relegation battle already in progress, fans of the club would be thrilled if the Magpies can pull off this major coup.
