June 24, 2021 – Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK – New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil has been voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for Week 9 of the 2021 MLS season.
Gil assisted all three of the Revolution’s goals in their 3-2 win over the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The midfielder set up Tajon Buchanan for the Revolution’s first goal by chipping the ball through three defenders and into the Canadian’s run behind the defense. Gil’s second assist came a few minutes later when he threaded a pass into DeJuan Jones’ run down the left side before the defender cut back onto his right foot and fired a shot inside the near post.
Early in the second half, Gil provided his third and final assist of the game on Gustavo Bou’s game-winning goal in the 51st minute. Gil received the ball at midfield after the Revolution cleared the Red Bulls’ corner kick and launched a no-look long pass over the Red Bulls’ defenders for Bou to run onto, and he ran the length of the Red Bulls’ half before chipping Carlos Coronel to put the Revolution 3-0 up.
With the three assists, Gil became the first player to reach double-digits in assists in MLS this season with 10. With the 10 assists through 10 games, he equaled the fastest to that total in a season in MLS history. Gil has also assisted on each of the Revolution’s last five goals, over the last two games. The Spaniard also still leads the league in chances created with 49, 20 more than the next closest pursuer.
Gil and the Revolution travel to Texas for their next game, against FC Dallas on Sunday, June 27 (9 p.m. ET; ESPN+).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
