England boss Gareth Southgate turned a few heads this week by including four right-backs in his 26-man squad for the European Championships this summer.
It had been widely reported that Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold was set to miss out on the squad, which had to be trimmed down from the 33-man provisional group that Southgate had named previously.
The 22-year-old was, however, included in the squad and will head to the Euros this summer, providing he can recover from an injury that forced him off in stoppage time of England’s 1-0 victory over Austria at the Riverside on Wednesday evening.
Southgate gave a few clues as to why he may ave included so many players in the same position by starting Kieran Trippier at left-back during the game, which both Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell missed after featuring in the Europa League and Champions League finals last week.
It now appears that Trippier could be set for a return to the Premier League this summer, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that Manchester United are interested in signing the former Tottenham Hotspur full-back.
According to the report, United are keen on signing the player who will be available for free when his current contract with Atletico Madrid expires next summer.
Solskjaer is reportedly on the lookout for an attacking right-back
United had been linked with the 30-year-old in January before he was given a suspension for breaching betting regulations, but it now appears that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are reconsidering an offer for the player.
Trippier, who moved to the Spanish capital from Spurs in 2019, grew up in nearby Bury and is believed to relish the opportunity to play for his boyhood club.
It is believed that Solskjaer is not happy with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s attacking abilities and sees Trippier as the perfect candidate to provide competition for the right-back spot ahead of next season.
Tripper is also admired by United bosses for his versatility and ability to play as a wing-back when required.
The England star played in all 35 of the matches he was available for during Atletico’s march to the La Liga title, which they secured on the final day of the season.
Despite paying around £20 million for the player less than two years ago, it is unlikely that the Spanish side would recoup anywhere close to that this summer due to the player’s expiring contract.
