Manchester United star makes unexpected U-turn over future | Shoot

The 2020/21 season was not far short of a disaster for David de Gea, as the Spaniard lost his starting spot, and then missed the crucial spot-kick that cost Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The 30-year-old failed to save any of the 11 penalties he faced against Villarreal in the shootout, before missing his own kick with a poor effort that was saved easily by Geronimo Rulli.

The ‘keeper was criticised by factions of United’s fanbase in the wake of the result, with many suggesting that he had given up with the club and speculating that he would leave this summer.

It had been widely reported that De Gea was not happy to play second fiddle to Henderson and that he would look to force a move away from the club when the window reopens at the end of June.

However, The Sun are now reporting that the Spanish international expects to stay in Manchester until at least the end of next season.

The report suggests that De Gea will stay with United and intends to fight for the number one spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

De Gea missed the crucial penalty in the Europa league defeat to Villarreal.

This is despite the club apparently finalising a deal to bring Aston Villa ‘keeper Tom Heaton to Old Trafford on a free transfer, to provide back up to the first choice goalkeeper.

De Gea, reportedly one of the league’s highest earners on a staggering £375,000 per week, has been given no hint that he will be sold this summer, and is therefore confident of regaining his first choice spot.

When it was rumoured that his decade-long stay at the club would be coming to an end, the former former Atletico Madrid man was heavily linked with a number of elite clubs from around Europe, including Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

However, it appears that he has now had a change of heart and is happy in Manchester, and will not look to force a move away.
