New Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is keen on raiding his former club RB Leipzig, with right-back Nordi Mukiele high on his transfer wishlist.
Having signed from French club Montpellier in 2018, Nordi Mukiele, 24, has gone onto make 126 appearances for RB Leipzig, contributing 10 goals and seven assists. The right-back received his first call-up to the senior French squad for World Cup qualifiers in September this year and he subsequently made his debut in the 2-0 win over Finland.
The 24-year-old is a regular fixture in RB Leipzig’s starting XI. He has registered two goals and an assist in 18 appearances across all competitions this season under manager Jesse Marsch. Mukiele’s performances have seemingly not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United weighing up a move for the RB Leipzig star.
Ralf Rangnick feels Mukiele, who has just over 18 months still to run at the Red Bull Arena, could not only come in and immediately improve the Manchester United squad but also over the next few years.
Man United must find an upgrade on Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has failed to build on his last season’s performances at Old Trafford, dishing out a series of inconsistent displays since the start of this term. The 24-year-old offers very little going forward while making numerous mistakes at the back. There’s a lot of frustration among the fans over his lack of development since arriving at the club from Crystal Palace in 2019.
The Red Devils have Diogo Dalot as a back-up to Wan-Bissaka, but the Portuguese international has failed to prove his worth in the little opportunities he has got this season. And with no regular game time on offer, Dalot could leave Old Trafford in January amid interest from Italian outfit AS Roma.
With Wan-Bissaka struggling for consistency and Dalot not deemed good enough to play week in week out, Man United must prioritise reinforcing the right-back position over others in the January transfer window.
Nordi Mukiele could be a shrewd acquisition for the Red Devils
Nordi Mukiele, in that regard, is a viable target for Manchester United. A right-back by trade, Mukiele has impressed over the years with his versatility to operate in a three-man backline, as a right midfielder or at right wing-back. He is quick, strong and an agile player who is blessed with a great engine, which enables him to bomb up and down the right flank throughout the game.
The Frenchman would be an instant upgrade over both on Wan-Bissaka and Dalot in terms of tactical versatility, whilst being an ideal right-back in Rangnick’s high-energy, counter-pressing brand of football. At 24, he still has a couple of areas to work upon, but going by his performances for Leipzig there’s a lot to like about the player.
Thus, Man United must test RB Leipzig’s resolve with a cheeky January bid for Mukiele.
