Lyanco back in contention | Southampton FC

Southampton have been boosted by the return to training of Lyanco following a two-month absence with a hamstring injury.

The defender has re-joined team training ahead of schedule after suffering the injury in the Emirates FA Cup win over Coventry in February.

However, Lyanco’s return has coincided with Shane Long dropping out of this week’s sessions with an ankle problem picked up in the draw at Leeds last weekend.

Updating on the fitness of his squad, manager Ralph Hasenhüttl said: “From the training ground this week, Lyanco is back in training with the team.

“[He’s completed the] first two sessions and today he made a rest, but it’s good to have him back on the pitch.

“[Alex McCarthy] is back in training, training with the goalkeeper team and is on the way back building up his qualities.

“Longy was not involved in the sessions so far this week. Today he was light training outside with his ankle injury he had in the Leeds game.

“It’s not that serious,” Hasenhüttl added. “It was good we had a scan immediately and he rested for two days and we’ll see how his ankle reacts to the session today and let’s have a look if he’s available for the weekend.”

The Irish striker could be a potential replacement for on loan striker Armando Broja, who will be ineligible to feature against his parent club Chelsea on Saturday.
