Scotland fans’ celebrations following their heroic 0-0 draw against England at Wembley last week were cut short as the Tartan Army bowed out of the competition after a 3-1 defeat to Croatia on Tuesday.
Steve Clarke’s side, the first Scotland team to qualify for a major tournament since 1998, wrote themselves into Scottish folklore with their performances in qualifying and with the result against England, but ultimately fell short of progression to the next round.
Captain Andy Robertson posted an emotional message on social media, thanking supporters for the efforts.
Meanwhile, teammate John McGinn has been heavily linked with Liverpool in recent days, with it being reported that Jurgen Klopp had asked Robertson about his fellow countryman.
However, Liverpool’s hopes of singing McGinn have been dealt a blow, as Aston Villa are reportedly adamant that the player will remain at Villa Park next season.
McGinn was one of Scotland’s standout players at Euro 2020
According to Express and Star, Villa are prepared to reject any approach for the 26-year-old, who joined the club from Hibernian for just £2.75 million in 2018.
McGinn is currently contracted to the midlands club until 2025 after signing an extension last year, and Villa have apparently valued him at £50 million.
Liverpool are in search of a central midfielder after Gini Wijnaldum departed the club to join French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Klopp was full of praise for McGinn following Villa’s shock 7-2 victory over Liverpool last season, and reportedly still holds an interest in the player.
Villa could already be damaged by the potential loss of captain Jack Grealish, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City.
