An altogether amusing moment was forthcoming during the friendly meeting between Aston Villa and Bristol City this weekend.
Watkins amongst those on target
Dean Smith’s Villa got their preparations for the fast-approaching new campaign back underway 24 hours ago.
The Claret and Blue made the trip to Ashton Gate, for a showdown with Championship outfit Bristol City.
Villa have of course enjoyed a fine summer to date, which has seen the Birmingham-based outfit secure deals for both Emi Buendia and, most recently, Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey.
Done deal. Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement for the transfer of Leon Bailey! 🔴 #AVFC #Bayer04

And, on Saturday, the positive vibes only continued to flow for Dean Smith and co.
A dominant display saw the visitors take the lead inside six minutes through youngster Jaden Philogene-Bidace, before established stars Esri Konsa and Ollie Watkins added some gloss to the scoreline either side of the interval.
Friend books Villans faithful
As outlined above, though, it was not the goalscorers, nor any of the players to have taken to the pitch at Ashton Gate, who ultimately stole the show.
Instead, it was the man in charge of proceedings – Kevin Friend.
Late in the 2nd-half, after awarding a free-kick in Aston Villa’s favour, Friend was lightheartedly (and bizarrely) targeted by a section of the away support, who began to chant:
‘You’re just a s**t Mike Dean!’
The official, though, evidently in good spirits, simply shrugged his shoulders, resulting in more PG calls of ‘Kevin, give us a wave’.
And Friend, from here, provided a rare glimpse into his more playful side, brandishing a yellow card in the direction of the visiting fans:
