In his press conference ahead of his Marseille team’s midweek trip to Angers, manager Jorge Sampaoli notably discussed the comparisons made between him and compatriot Marcelo Bielsa, who also coached at OM.
His words transcribed in L’Équipe, the Argentine sought to downplay the potential similarities between his Marseille side and Bielsa’s in 2014/15, notably over whether his style of play could lead to a similar physical collapse in the second half of the season.
“For me, the comparisons are exagerrated. We’ve just started the season, we don’t know what will happen in the next few weeks, with a crowded fixture list. There will obviously be obstacles for us.”
“Marcelo Bielsa’s OM had a very good start to the season. We obviously hope to do so as well, and to not let up in the second half of the season. That will depend on the team’s development – if there isn’t any, it will be a lot harder. We’ll have to see how this team manages crises, because there will be some, and then we’ll see what we’re made of.”
