Speaking at an event with representatives from the regional non-league authority present, Italian FA (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina discussed the potential sanctions to be imposed on Juventus for their failure to renounce their Super League participation. His words transcribed by Sky Sport, Gravina pointed out that the Bianconeri would be excluded from the league should they remain in the project.
With both Inter and Milan part of the nine clubs that have reached an agreement with UEFA to leave the project and commit to staying in current competitions, Juventus are the only Italian club left in the Super League, joined by La Liga sides Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Juventus president Andrea Agnelli had been a key actor in the dramatic breakaway project, having left his roles at UEFA and the European Club Associations following the announcement last month and become vice-chairman of the Super League. With the majority of the 12 participating clubs pulling out within a week of the announcement following pressure from fans, sponsors and the threat of UEFA sanctions, Juventus have remained committed to the project.
“Juventus would be excluded from Serie A if it does not pull out from the Super League. As you know, nine teams have renounced it. Another three, including Juventus, are quite resistant. There’s a very clear and precise norm from the IOC, and in the charters of the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) and the federations. If the club doesn’t accept the principle, I’m sorry, but it would be out. I hope that this standoff ends soon.”
“I hope I can act as a mediator, this tug-of-war between between the three clubs and UEFA does not benefit Italian football or Juventus. This confrontation is not good for the world of sport, I hope that there will be a positive solution to the fight between international bodies like FIFA or UEFA and several clubs. The FIGC has already said that the rules which foresee non-participation apply if the principles imposed by UEFA are not accepted.”
