‘I was blown away’ – Manchester City boss Taylor thrilled with second half performance

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor said that he was blown away by his side’s second half performance as they came from behind to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup final last night.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, The Cityzens came out for the second half determined to get back in the game and they put in a fabulous performance as they scored three goals to turn the tie on it’s head.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Manchester City boss Taylor raved about his side’s second half performance.

“The second half performance was a complete contrast from the first,” Taylor said. “We probably looked a little bit nervous in the first half, some of our build-up play wasn’t too great but we spoke about belief and faith in what we do at half-time.

“I have to say that I was blown away by the girls in the second half, the way that they attacked the game from a technical point, tactically and I thought physically we stepped up so many levels. We arguably could have scored more goals against a really dangerous team in Chelsea.”

Manchester City have now won eight domestic trophies in eight seasons, however, just one of those pieces of silverware have come in the form of a league title. Taylor went on to express his desire to guide Manchester City back to their former position as champions of England.

He said “I have always said that when I came into the job, one WSL title is not enough, that’s the true test of a team when it’s a 22-game season, especially when you have as many injuries as we had earlier in the year.

“The title is what we really want, these titles are fantastic but they are not easy to win. There’s the Champions League as well, we were disappointed to bow out in the early stages and there are things that we have to look at in our preparation and in our succession plan.

“We really have to be at the forefront of things but we are trying, we have got an incredible group of staff at the club who have really dug in this season and are trying to push the boundaries and really push this club onto the next level which is winning those titles and not just one. Eight trophies in eight seasons….we want to push that up massively.”

Manchester City are back in action next Sunday when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
