Fede Valverde’s extra time winner has put Real Madrid into the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.
Vinicius opened the scoring on the night, grabbing his 15th goal of the season, following a fine through pass from partner in crime Benzema.
Luuk de Jong then levelled for Barcelona somewhat fortuitously from close range right on half-time, scoring his third goal in as many games after being linked with a move away from Camp Nou this month.
Madrid were the better side in the first half and it wasn’t until the 72nd minute when Benzema put them in front once again, this time with a neat finish from six yards out.
Second half substitute Ansu Fati came on to score the equaliser for Barcelona with a free header inside the box, after some poor defending by Los Blancos. It ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and it took extra time to find a winner.
Uruguayan midfielder Fede Valverde was the hero on the night as he tucked away his low shot after a fine counter-attacking move by Madrid.
Barcelona had their chances to score but will now be focusing on their return to domestic action and next month’s Europa League clash with Napoli.
Madrid will play the winner of Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club, who battle it out on Thursday for a place in Sunday’s Super Cup final.
