Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl was reasonably happy with a point on the road at Fulham, but felt his side were unlucky not to take all three.
Saints threatened to break the deadlock in the first half when James Ward-Prowse saw a trademark free-kick pushed on to the angle of post and bar by goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, before the loose ball took an awkward bounce to deceive the onrushing Ché Adams.
Then Shane Long and Theo Walcott both saw goals ruled out for offside – the second by VAR – as Saints were denied victory on a day when the boss was without injured trio Jannik Vestergaard, Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond, as well as the suspended Oriol Romeu.
“I think it was ok,” Hasenhüttl said of the goalless draw at Craven Cottage. “I think we had bigger chances than the opponent and scored two goals – the second one was fantastic play, so a little bit unlucky.
“We had a big chance in the first half after the free-kick from Prowsey, when Ché had a big chance to score.
“I saw one handball in the box that I think can be a penalty, but in the end to take a point here is not so bad.
“It’s tough here – the pitch is tight, they put on a lot of pressure and if you concede a goal you have nearly no chance to come back, so the clean sheet was the most important thing today.
“You could always see that the opponent was dangerous but we defended well, especially around the box.
“There were some defending scenes I remember when we had to come behind the ball to block shots, especially in overtime when Jack blocked a shot that was important.
“After the changes we had in the team, it was important that the new players coming in showed up immediately, so that was good.
“I’m happy for the point for the guys. After the loss against Man City, it was important that we take the next point without losing again.”
