Chelsea legend Joe Cole has called for Mason Mount to start ahead of Jack Grealish against Germany in the last 16 of Euro 2020.

Mount has consistently been one of Chelsea’s best players over the past two seasons. Frank Lampard gave him his first chance in their first team and he has not looked back since.

He has now played 107 times for Chelsea and in this time he has also established himself as a regular for England.

One former player perfect for each Euros last-16 side

The midfielder started in England’s first two group games at Euro 2020 against Croatia and Scotland.

Mount’s Chelsea teammate Billy Gilmour shone for the Scots at Wembley. But a couple of days later he tested positive for COVID-19. After coming into contact with him, Mount and Ben Chilwell were forced to self-isolate.

Both players missed England‘s final group game against the Czech Republic. Their isolation period ends on Monday 28 June ahead of their last 16 tie against Germany on Tuesday.

As cited by The Metro, Cole has told talkSPORT that Mount should take Grealish’s place against Joachim Low’s side:

“As much as I love Jack, I’d go with Mase ahead of him for this game.

“Jack won’t like this, but having Jack off the bench, if it’s level after 60 minutes, imagine Wembley seeing Jack step up if we need something.

“You need someone on the bench who can change something.

“Mason’s a little bit more disciplined in the central position which allows you to change the system a little bit.

“It’s like choosing [a favourite] between your kids. Choosing between Mason Mount and Jack Grealish… I love them both!”

Elsewhere, Lorenzo Insigne has suggested that Chelsea’s Jorginho deserves to be in contention for this year’s Ballon d’Or:

“We have quality players. You talked about Jorginho and it’s correct,” Insigne said in response to a question about whether Jorginho would deserve the Ballon D’or.

“He had spent some fantastic years at Chelsea and I am proud to have him in our team.

“I’m not the one deciding if he deserves the Ballon d’Or, but I hope he’ll be shortlisted, he deserves so, he is a great player. I call him the professor and we are all happy to play with him.”
